It is very uncommon to hear a child report anyone to the police, later on, their own parents. Most of the time it is parents who normally punish their children for doing wrong.
But this time around, a 9-year-old girl was flipping the script. The little girl courageously walked into the Barnesville Police Station all by herself on June 8 and reported her parents. The Star Tribune reports that she told the law enforcement officers that her parents had been growing marijuana and selling it too. Officer Ryan Beattie told ABC News that the unnamed 9-year-old appeared conflicted about snitching on her own parents, but she was left with no other choice. The little girl was very angry at her parents who shamelessly grew and sold marijuana in the same house where they lived with their 9-year-old daughter.
“She was clearly upset because she didn’t want to turn her parents in. But at the same time, she knew her parents did wrong.” Beattie told the Tribune that speaking with the young girl was almost like “interviewing an adult,” noting her knowledge in areas that most 9-year-olds do not possess.
When police searched the girl’s home on June 24, they allegedly discovered seven marijuana plants, drug paraphernalia as well as a substance that field-tested positive for to be meth. The Star Tribune reports that the daughter spent time with her grandparents following the investigation, but ABC News says she was shortly back with her parents.
Officer Beatle revealed that the 9-year-old girl was very intelligent, she said “She was very smart and very articulate,” the officer said.
“It was almost like talking to an adult.”
“She gave some pretty specific information about things, like types of drug paraphernalia, that no young person ought to have knowledge about,” Beattie said.
Beattie said the girl told police that her parents blew smoke into the family dog’s mouth, which worried the girl. This is what prompted her to report them to the police because she loved her dog so much.
“She was afraid that she would get sick. She was afraid that the dog would get sick,” Beattie said.
Apparently, no charge has been filed yet, although Beattie said charges will likely be brought once the drug testing unit return results of evidence. The little girl has been placed back at her home by social services.
“We have spoken with the parents,” Beattie said.
“There is no sign of retaliation from her parents. Both of them understood they were wrong and showed remorse.”
Beattie didn’t appear concerned about the daughter moving back in with her parents because she was sure the girl was in safe hands after they had spoken to her parents.
“We have spoken with the parents,” he told ABC, “She seems to be well taken care of.”
At the time of the report, charges against the parents had yet to be filed. There don’t appear to be any updates on the case made available to the public. It is so unfortunate that this little girl had to live in such a toxic environment where her own parents exposed her to drugs like marijuana which could potentially harm her and her dog.
Thanks to this brave girl for standing up for her rights and taking the courage to report her parents to the police. Hopefully, they will be dealt with accordingly and charges pressed for endangering their child’s welfare once the drug results are out.
Thanks to the police officials too who believed this 9-year-old, despite her age and took action immediately by going to inspect her home.
This story should be a good lesson for parents. Parents should learn to put the needs and welfare of their children first before anything else. Using or dealing in the sale of drugs like marijuana and other drugs around children is highly prohibited, growing drugs at home where you have little children is not only unsafe and extremely dangerous to your child but also a crime that is punishable by the courts of law. Drug abuse has so many side effects especially to children; parents with a drug abuse problem often times neglect their own children and fail or forget to take care of them. In most cases such parents end up in prison, leaving their kids on the streets or if they are lucky with relatives.
What example are you setting for your children? It is very important that as a parent you sit down and reflect on what is more important to you and your children and also be the best role model for them to look up to, someone they would want to emulate in life.
This is an inspiring story, hopefully, more children will come out to report such crimes.
