They say the eyes are the window to the soul. But did you know your eyes can also tell you a lot about your health?
Yes, as a matter of fact, you can learn a lot about a person by gazing into their eyes. Not only do you see their beauty, but a lot more. Like many other parts of our bodies, the eye is a very essential organ which literally gives off visible warning signs that something is not right.
Through your eyes, you can easily detect eye problems and many other conditions. From high blood pressure to cancer, your eyes and vision are vulnerable to a slew of medical conditions.
Here are just a few signs and what may potentially be causing them.
1. Permanent Stye:
What is a stye? A stye is a small, painful lump on or inside the eyelid or around the eye. It does not look pleasant. It’s formed because of a blocked sebaceous gland. It should go away on its own within a few days, but if it stays there or reoccurs, it could be the result of sebaceous carcinoma.
Therefore, if you have a stubborn stye, it’s better you go see the doctor.
2. Loss of Eyebrow:
It’s not uncommon for eye brow hair to age and fall out. However, rapid eyebrow hair loss could indicate so many things. The most common being stress and aging.
Thinning of eyebrows can also indicate a shortage of thyroid hormones, also known as hypothyroidism. It’s best to consult your local practitioner if you notice excessive eye brow hair loss.
3. Blurred Vision:
In this era of technology, getting blurred vision is the most common symptom that your body can give you. Unless you have a concussion or you’re just aging, the main cause of blurred vision is “digital eye strain,’l as most doctors call it. It is caused by spending long hours watching digital screens.
Please consult your doctor if this continues to occur.
4. Blind Spots:
Ever experienced sparkles, zig-zags or stars? If yes, then you’ve experienced blind spots. They typically last between 50-60 minutes and are immediately followed by a throbbing headache.
If this happens to you on a daily basis, consult your doctor to avoid any more serious health issue.
5. Bulging Eyes:
Everyone has experienced at some point that feeling where they feel their eyes are going to pop out. Usually rubbing your eyes or blinking tends to fix this. However, if you’re constantly experiencing this, it could be a sign of overactive thyroid. This causes thyroid eye disease.
Other symptoms include difficulty closing your eyes, which gives you that popping feeling. If you are constantly experiencing something like this, get it checked immediately.
6. Yellow Whites:
You can easily notice this sign if you look into the mirror. If the whites of the eyes are tinged with yellow, it could possibly indicate that you have jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and other liver and blood diseases. It may be a sign of compromised liver function or liver failure.
Yellowy lesions on the eye and skin near the eye may on the other hand be indicative of raised cholesterol.
Don’t hesitate to get this checked out immediately, because more severe health issues could arise if you ignore it.
7. Cloudy Vision (with diabetes):
Diabetes is a deadly disease that affects millions every year. If you have diabetes and start to experience blurry vision, then it’s possible that you have diabetic retinopathy.
It is the most common cause of vision loss among people with diabetes and the leading cause of vision impairment and blindness among working age adults.
It’s caused by damaged blood vessels in the photosensitive retina tissue. It’s important that you lead a diabetic diet, especially if you are experience this.
8. Impaired Cloudy Vision or Vision Loss:
Change in vision is always a warning sign that something is wrong.
So if you experience a sudden change in vision or you completely lose it for a moment, don’t hesitate to seek help. Because these symptoms can indicate that you’re having a stroke.
Some of the diseases that can manifest in the eyes are frightening. There is no doubt about that. It is therefore important to have regular eye examination. Early detection of many of these conditions can arm you with the tools you need to get a hold on your health. Therefore, you cannot afford to relax when it comes to your health. Make a yearly examination of your eyes a priority in your life.
