Bras are simply a fact of life for the vast majority of women. Once we get past puberty our mothers tell us that we now have to wear bras all the time. Sometimes it’s nice to have good support, but other times they can be very annoying, or even painful if you wear them for too long.
Most women will agree that the best part of the day is when you can take your bra off and relax just a little bit.
Or can you? Chances are if you’ve been on the internet or talked with enough women you’ve probably heard countless rumors about bras that have frightened you. Should you wear a bra when you sleep at night? Do bras cause breast cancer?
Worry no longer as we’ve scoured the internet for many bra related myths and have checked whether they are actually true. Unsurprisingly, many of them simply are not!
Check the list down below to see what myths we were able to bust. No pun intended!
Your breasts will become saggy if you don’t wear a bra.
A terrifying prospect to be sure, who wants their boobs to start sagging earlier than they need to be? Well, worry no longer. This myth doesn’t appear to be true. Sure your boobs will sag a little when they’re not held in a bra, as that is how gravity works, however there is no evidence that suggests your boobs will become less saggy by wearing a bra constantly. According to Health.com, boob sag is instead caused by your age and the effect of gravity over time which will always happen regardless of your bra. However, if you are concerned about premature sag there are chest exercises you can perform that will help strengthen your girls right up.
Underwire bras increase your risk for breast cancer
Breast cancer is terrifying and we are all rightfully concerned whenever we hear of something that can cause breast cancer. The myth that underwire bras can cause breast cancer has been around for a while, but according to BreastCancer.org, there has been absolutely no scientific evidence linking underwire bras to an increase in breast cancer. You can continue to wear those bras once more with no fear.
You should sleep with your bra on
It’s hard to believe that so many women have been forced to sleep uncomfortably because of this myth. Sleeping with a bra on is simply not comfortable. The myth is that sleeping with a bra on will prevent sagging, but as we saw in the first myth, there is simply no evidence suggesting that wearing a bra or not has any true effect on boob sag. Cosmopolitan asked Dr. Seth Rankin who confirmed that there is unlikely to be any real effect gained by wearing a bra to sleep. Please never wear a bra to sleep if you want to have a good night’s sleep.
Not wearing a bra causes stretch marks
A myth that seems like on the surface it would be true. Surely if your boobs lack support there is going to be some additional stretch marks, right? Well, to put it simply: no. Stretch marks are caused by changes in your body’s composition over time. Having very large breasts can have a small benefit from having support while you sleep, however the effect is likely to be so small that it is simply not worth it. You’re better off having a good night’s sleep and wearing a properly fit bra.
All bra sizes are the same, regardless of brand
This myth is one of the worst on our list. The sizing of bras are brand-dependent and not all bras are made the same. When you go shopping for a new brand you should always make sure you get sized properly so you’re getting the best fitting bra. Getting a bra that is too small or too large can cause a lot of discomfort that could be easily avoided.
Bras cannot be machine-washed
Again, completely untrue. Although it is worth noting that even though you can wash your bras in your washing machine there are still benefits to washing them by hand as well. By washing them by hand you reduce the risk of them being ripped apart by you accidentally leaving the setting too high. We all know that bras are far too expensive and made of too many delicate fabrics for us to just throw in a washer without any thought.
You can wear the same bra for several days
Also untrue. We all sweat constantly and our bras can absorb all of that sweat. Even worse, if you’re constantly wearing the same bra you’re not giving the elastic in your bra any time to rest and re-shape. This means that the bra will support you less and less causing more discomfort. It’s better to wash your bras a lot than it is to wear dirty ones constantly.
You don’t need a sports bra if you have small breasts
Many women believe that sports bras are not important, especially if they have smaller breasts. However this myth is also very untrue. Sure sports bras aren’t the most comfortable, however they serve a very important function for all women. According to Susan Nethero, founder the bra emporium Intimacy, many women are experiencing breast injuries from the tissue inside the breast constantly moving up and down during exercises. This is true for all breast sizes from the biggest to the smallest, the tissue can be negatively affected during exercise.
You only need to be sized once for bras
Very untrue. Much like the rest of your body, your breasts are constantly changing. They may be very minor changes, they are still changes nevertheless and that can cause bras that once fit perfectly to no longer fit properly. It’s recommended that you get fitted for your bra size every 6 months to a year. Every woman knows the pain of wearing a bra that doesn’t fit, so make sure you are being measured regularly.
Your bra never needs to be replaced
You just bought the perfect bra for your girls and you’ve made sure it’s the absolute perfect fit. Now you’ll never have to buy a new bra ever again, right? Sadly, no. The key part of your bra is made up of elastics that will stretch with time. After a year or so the bra will no longer be as supportive as it was when you first got it and it will be time to say goodbye to it. You can rotate a large number of bras to delay this, however as noted above your breast size can also change after a year, so it still may be time to say goodbye.
There you have it, 10 myths completely debunked. It turns out that there are a lot of rumors about the female body, especially the girls, but there is also a lot of information that proves or disproves them. It always helps to research anything you hear from friends or family.
